In this series of short interviews and discussions filmed at AV Valves Summit 2023, the faculty delve into sharing invaluable insights and expert opinion on transcatheter mitral and tricuspid intervention.
They examine a range of topics which include the development of TEER, the importance of quality of life, repair vs replacement and how to best shape the future of MR and TR treatment.
The AV Valves Summit led by course directors Prof Francesco Maisano (San Raffaele Hospital, Milan, IT), Prof Marta Sitges (University of Barcelona, Barcelona, ES), Prof Marco Metra (University of Brescia, Brescia, IT) and Prof Ralph Stephan von Bardeleben (University Medical Center of Mainz, Mainz, DE) provided a platform to advance knowledge and shape the trajectory of this treatment in cardiovascular healthcare.
- Gain an understanding of the anatomy of mitral and tricuspid valves to inform appropriate intervention strategies
- The importance of incorporating quality of life considerations into patient management plans, aiming to improve the overall well-being of individuals undergoing valve interventions
- Learn to identify, prevent, and manage complications associated with mitral and tricuspid valve interventions to ensure patient safety
- Explore evidence-based strategies for decision-making in heart failure management
- Assess emerging trends and future innovations impacting the trajectory of mitral and tricuspid valve therapies
- Interventional Cardiologist
- Heart Failure Specialist
- Cardiac Surgeon

Head of Cardiac Surgery, Director of the Valve Center
Prof Maisano is Professor of Cardiac Surgery and Director of the Valve Center at San Raffaele Research Hospital in Milan.
Prof Maisano is a cardiac surgeon with large experience in standard cardiovascular treatments and innovative technologies, as well as cross-trained in interventional cardiology, with specific focus on structural interventions.
In his research, Prof Maisano was the principal investigator of the ACCESS EU Registry, the largest European registry monitoring the real-world results of MitraClip therapy. He is the co-inventor of a surgical annular prosthesis, which is now a standard surgical technique in the treatment of functional mitral valve regurgitation.
Prof Maisano is an Editorial Board member of Cardiac Failure Review.
Director, Cardiovascular Institute
Prof Marta Sitges is a senior consultant non-invasive cardiologist at the Cardiovascular Institute in Hospital Clinic and Professor of Medicine at the University of Barcelona. She has also been the Director of the Cardiovascular Institute since October 2015.
Her main clinical practice is related to clinical and interventional echocardiography, sports cardiology and heart valve disease. She has an extensive publication track in these fields with participation in leading National and International meetings, she has received more than 60 peer reviewed grants and directed multiple MD and PhD thesis.
