Robert H Eckel, MD, is President of the American Heart Association (AHA). He is also Professor of Medicine at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. Dr Eckel has a joint appointment in the Department of Food Science and Human Nutrition at Colorado State University, and previously held a joint appointment in the Department of Biochemistry, Biophysics and Genetics (1989 to 1995), now in the Department of Physiology and Biophysics. Shortly after his arrival in Denver, Dr Eckel was appointed Associate Program Director of the Adult General Clinical Research Center (GCRC) at the University of Colorado at Denver and Health Sciences Center (UCDHSC). In 1993, he assumed the role of Program Director, a position he continues to hold. In addition to a plethora of committees and related responsibilities at UCDHSC, Dr Eckel’s research has led to his involvement in a number of national organizations such as the North American Association for the Study of Obesity (NAASO) (Past-President), the Association for Patient Oriented Research (APOR), and the Western Society for Clinical Investigation (WSCI).
