John GF Cleland was appointed to the Chair of Cardiology at the University of Hull in 1999. His particular interests within the field of heart failure include the role of myocardial hibernation and diastolic heart failure. He has instituted a large clinical programme using new techniques for the diagnosis of heart failure and its optimal management. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians, the American College of Cardiology and the European Society of Cardiology. He serves on many advisory boards, editorial boards of scientific journals and actively participates in clinical trials, and regularly publishes in peer-review journals.
