Overview
In this months Journal Club, our featured presenter, José Enrique Ortega Sollero (Autonomous University of Madrid, ES) is joined by Pilar Martín (National Centre for Cardiovascular Research, ES), Dr Jose Alvarez-Cardona (New York University School of Medicine, US), Prof Dan Lenihan (Saint Francis Healthcare System, US) and Prof Joe Carver (University of Pennsylvania, US) to discuss ‘CD69 Deficiency Confers Genetic Susceptibility to Anti-PD1-induced Myocarditis’.
They will be dissecting and analysing a recently published paper that describes that there is an upregulation of the expression of the microRNA721 in the plasma of mice and humans with myocarditis.

José Enrique Ortega Sollero
José Enrique Ortega Sollero is enrolled in the Molecular Biosciences doctorate programme at the Autonomous University of Madrid, Madrid, ES.
He graduated in Biology at University of Seville in 2021 and did the Molecular Biomedicine Master degree at the Autonomous University of Madrid. José Enrique Ortega Sollero received the ACCIONA master grant to do his masters thesis at CNIC. He has participated in the Young Investigator Awards during the Global Cardio-Oncology summit 2023 where he got the second place.
Pilar Martín
María Pilar Martín is assistant professor at the National Centre for Cardiovascular Research and author of a long list of publications that have also made her an expert reviewer for the Agencia Nacional de Evaluación y Prospectiva, for international calls for applications and numerous scientific publications.
Daniel Lenihan
Prof Daniel Lenihan is a cardio-oncologist specialising in cardiology, heart disease and advanced heart failure, at Saint Francis Healthcare System, Cape Girardeau, US.
He is a co-Founder and Board Member of the International Cardio-Oncology Society (ICOS), which is an international professional association whose primary goal is to eliminate cardiac disease as a barrier to effective cancer therapy.
He is actively involved in patient care as the Director of the Cardio-Oncology Programme, Cardiac Rehabilitation, and the Heart Failure clinic at Saint Francis Healthcare System.
Joe Carver
Prof Joe Carver is the Bernard Fishman Clinical Professor of Medicine at the Abramson Cancer Center of the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, US. He is the Chief of Staff at the Abramson Cancer Center.
He is the Director of the Thalheimer Cardio-oncology Center at the Abramson Cancer Center and his clinical practice is in the subspecialty of cardio-oncology.
Jose Alvarez-Cardona
Dr Jose Alvarez-Cardona is a Cardiologist and Assistant Professor at New York University School of Medicine, New York, US.
He received his medical degree from University of Puerto Rico School of Medicine. He specialises in cardiomyopathy and heart failure. His specialities include cardiac amyloidosis, cardiomyopathy and heart failure, congestive heart failure, heart transplant and left ventricular assist devices.
