Sergio Fazio, MD, PhD, is Professor of Medicine and Pathology in the Atherosclerosis Research Unit in the Departments of Medicine and Pathology, Division of Cardiovascular Medicine at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. He is also the Codirector of the Lipid Clinic and Atherosclerosis Research Unit, and Director of the Lipid Laboratory. Dr Fazio has served on review panels with both the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the American Heart Association (AHA). He also regularly serves as ad hoc reviewer for many scientific publications, and is an editorial board member of Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis, and Vascular Biology, and Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism. Dr Fazio’s work has been published in many leading journals, including Science, Journal of Clinical Investigation, Circulation, and Nature Medicine. He is an invited presenter at medical and scientific conferences, both nationally and internationally, and holds research grants from the AHA and the NIH. After a clinical fellowship in metabolism at the University of Rome and a research fellowship at the Cardiovascular Research Institute, University of California San Francisco (UCSF), he was promoted to Instructor in Medicine at UCSF before joining the medical faculty at Vanderbilt University. Dr Fazio earned a PhD in molecular biology from the University of Siena, Italy, having graduated from the medical school of the University of Rome, and he completed his internship and residency in internal medicine at the same institution.
