Biography

Academic History

Michael Böhm studied medicine from 1977 to 1984 at the Medical School of Hannover (MHH), Germany. During 1979–1981, he completed his doctoral thesis at the Centre for Toxicology and Pharmacology at MHH. He then spent time (1982) at the Tufts University, Boston, USA. Following that, from 1982–1984 he worked as a scientific assistant at the University Hospital Hamburg-Eppendorf (division of general pharmacology). From 1986 to 1993, he trained in internal medicine and cardiology at the Medizinische Klinik I, Klinikum Großhadern, of the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München. In 1993 he obtained his habilitation and became assistant professor of internal medicine/cardiology at the Universität zu Köln (University of Cologne). Between 1995 and 2000 he held a C3-Professorship there; in 2000 he was appointed to a C4-Professorship for Internal Medicine with focus on Cardiology/Angiology at the Saarland University, Homburg/Saar, Germany — at which time he became Director of the Clinic of Internal Medicine III (Cardiology, Angiology and Internal Intensive Care).

Career Overview

Since October 2000, Michael Böhm has served as Director of the Clinic for Internal Medicine III (Kardiologie, Angiologie and Internistische Intensivmedizin) at the Saarland University Medical Center in Homburg/Saar, Germany. Earlier, he was a long-time professor and senior physician at the University of Cologne. He has held important leadership roles in major cardiovascular societies: he served as President of the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Kardiologie (DGK) between 2009 and 2011, and subsequently was a board member of the European Society of Cardiology (ESC). In addition, he is (or has been) chairman of scientific committees, including having served on the evaluation board of the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG), and since 2022 chairs the Educational Committee of the European Heart Failure Association (HFA). In his editorial and scholarly roles, he is Chief Editor of Clinical Research in Cardiology, consulting editor for Basic Research in Cardiology, and serves as an Editorial Board Member of Cardiac Failure Review.

Areas of Speciality & Research Focus

  • Cardiology, with particular emphasis on heart failure, including experimental and clinical heart failure — pathophysiology, signal transduction in the failing heart, vascular biology
  • Hypertension and vascular diseases, atherosclerosis, and related cardiovascular disorders
  • Translational and clinical cardiovascular research, including interventional cardiology, pharmacology, and intensive-care cardiology

His clinical and experimental research has included, for example, work on renal sympathetic denervation in resistant hypertension, exploring effects on blood pressure and glucose metabolism.

He has also contributed significantly to heart-failure outcome research and treatment optimisation — including involvement in high-impact clinical trials and guideline-shaping analyses (e.g., on blood pressure, heart rate, and outcomes in heart failure).

Contributions & Recognition

  • Michael Böhm is a highly prolific author: by some counts, over 350 original papers, book chapters and review articles
  • His work is highly cited: in a 2019 citation-analysis of German cardiovascular research, his institution ranked 1st and 2nd for most-cited reviews and 3rd for most-cited researchers — underscoring his influence in the field
  • He has received numerous scientific awards: among them the Arthur Weber Award from the DGK, the Franz Groß Science Award of the German Hypertension Society, the Franz Loogen Award of the Society for Cardiovascular Research, and in 2012 the Bundesverdienstkreuz (Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany)
  • In 2025, he was also recognized by Research.com as one of Germany’s leading scientists in medicine

Notable Roles & Editorial Work

  • Chief Editor of Clinical Research in Cardiology
  • Consulting Editor, Basic Research in Cardiology; Editorial Board member on several high-impact journals (e.g. Cardiovascular Research, Cardiovascular Drugs and Therapy, European Heart Journal)
  • Past President of the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Kardiologie (DGK)
  • Board member (past/ present) of the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) and of the European Heart Failure Association (HFA)
