Biography

Personal History

Dr Mandeep R Mehra was born on December 3rd, 1967 in Delhi, India— the historic day Christiaan Barnard carried out the first human heart transplant.7 One of the country’s leading cardiologists in advanced heart failure and cardiac transplantation, he is a Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School and the Medical Director of the Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH) Heart and Vascular Center.5

Dr. Mehra says heart center cardiologists and surgeons practice a form of medicine that mirrors the vision of the future, which is cardiac care that is predictive, personalized, preemptive and participatory. His time at the University of Maryland Medical Center was marked by compassionate personalised care and a special emphasis on cardiac care for the whole person.3

Academic History

An alumnus of the 1983 batch, Dr Mehra received his medical degree from Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences in Maharashtra, India.2 He did his residency in internal medicine at Mount Carmel Medical Center in Ohio and a fellowship in cardiovascular disease and advanced heart failure and transplant cardiology at Ochsner Clinic Foundation Hospital in New Orleans.1 In 2018, he earned his Masters in Science from the London School of Economics in Health Economics, Outcomes and Management with a cardiovascular sciences concentration.4

Dr. Mehra has certifications in internal medicine, cardiovascular disease and advanced heart failure and transplant cardiology.1 He has authored and published over 400 book chapters, manuscripts, editorials and abstracts focusing on all aspects of advanced heart failure and cardiac transplantation, treatment modalities, medical therapies and alternatives to transplantation.4 He has devoted research to the field of Mechanical Circulatory Systems in investigating novel left ventricular assist devices and his research has received support from the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute.4 His recent studies focus on immunosuppression, proteomic and genomic biomarkers in peripheral blood for the prediction of cardiac rejection, as well as the effects of tobacco exposure on donor and recipient heart outcomes.1

Dr. Mehra is editor-in-chief of The Journal of Heart and Lung Transplantation and Past-President of the International Society of Heart and Lung Transplantation (ISHLT).8 He serves on the Executive Council of the Heart Failure Society of America (HFSA), co-chaired the 2007 and 2008 HFSA Annual Scientific Programs and is now President of the HFSA. He is also a core member of the American Board of Internal Medicine’s testing committee on Advanced Heart Failure and Transplant Cardiology.8
