John JP Kastelein is Founder of the Lipid Research Clinic at the Academic Medical Centre in Amsterdam. He is Medical Director of the Dutch National Foundation for the Identification of Familial Hypercholesterolaemia, Chairman of the National Scientific Committee on Familial Hypercholesterolaemia and President of the Dutch Atherosclerosis Society. His major research interests include the molecular basis of hypertriglyceridaemia, hypercholesterolaemia and low-and high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol. He was awarded an Established Investigatorship of the Dutch Heart Foundation. Professor Kastelein received his medical degree from the University of Amsterdam in 1980. He trained in lipidology and molecular biology at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver.
