Overview
e-SPACE Heart Failure 2022 was the third edition of the annual global online conference on heart failure. Bringing together thought-leaders from across the globe and broadcast over three time-zones – Asia, Europe, and the Americas – e-SPACE Heart Failure 2022 optimised geographical reach whilst delivering both global and regional insight.
Course leadership Prof Stefan Anker (Charité Campus Virchow-Klinikum, Berlin, DE), Dr Javed Butler (Baylor Scott and White Research Institute, Texas, US), Prof Andrew Coats (University of Warwick, Coventry, UK) and Dr Shelley Zieroth (University of Manitoba, Manitoba, CA) lead an interactive programme of plenary sessions, meet the experts, case discussions and industry sponsored sessions focusing on the patient journey.
For the first time, e-SPACE Heart Failure 2022 brought together TMA’s mandate for the delivery of continuing professional development to healthcare professionals to achieve concordance with appropriate treatment plans, with Radcliffe Cardiology’s goal to deliver cardiovascular knowledge to best support cardiovascular communities transform theory into practice.
Learning Objectives
- Review the burden of heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF) and heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) as one of the leading causes of disability and mortality worldwide
- Understand the latest guideline recommendations and discuss their applicability according to patients phenotypes
- Discuss the implementation in clinical practice of the four foundational therapies and additional drugs and devices to improve patient outcomes
- Develop a comprehensive understanding of best practices for the screening, diagnosis and management of the patient with heart failure and comorbidities
- Translate the findings of recent studies and guidelines into optimal patient management in the regional contexts

Faculty Biographies
John J Atherton
Director of Cardiology
Dr John Atherton is Director of Cardiology, Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital, Associate Professor, University of Queensland, and Adjunct Professor, Queensland University of Technology.
Dr Atherton was on the board of the Cardiac Society of Australia and New Zealand (CSANZ, 2009–2015) and chairs the CSANZ Professional Ethics Standards Committee. He previously chaired the Asia-Pacific Acute Decompensated Heart Failure Registry Scientific Advisory Committee and the CSANZ Heart Failure Council. Dr Atherton is an appointed member of the Australian Government Medical Services Advisory Committee and provides advice to Government on public funding arrangements through Medicare.
Dr Atherton is Associate Editor, Heart Lung and Circulation, and sits on the editorial board for Cardiac Failure Review. His research interests include screening for pre-symptomatic heart disease and heart failure disease management. His contributions to service enhancement…
Piotr Ponikowski
Head of the Department of Heart Diseases
Piotr Ponikowski is Head of the Department of Heart Diseases, Wroclaw Medical University and Head of the Cardiology Department at the Center for Heart Diseases at 4th Military Hospital, Wroclaw, Poland. His research interests mainly include heart failure (HF), coronary artery disease and cardiac arrhythmias. He has been involved in numerous research projects, such as the benefits of physical rehabilitation in patients with chronic HF, assessment of metabolic derangements in HF (with special interest in iron deficiency), evaluation of reflex control in the cardiorespiratory system in order to optimise assessment and management of patients with HF. He has been involved in numerous clinical trials as main investigator, member of international steering committees, endpoint committees and advisory boards.
Mark Petrie
Professor/Honorary Consultant (Institute of Cardiovascular & Medical Sciences)
Prof Mark Petrie is Professor of Cardiology in the Institute of Cardiovascular and Medical Sciences at the University of Glasgow, UK. Prof Petrie started his studies as an undergraduate at Edinburgh University, before training in cardiology in Glasgow. He worked as a heart failure and interventional cardiologist for many years before transferring to the University of Glasgow in 2016.
Prof Petrie's research interests focus on diabetes and cardiovascular disease in heart failure, structural intervention and revascularization in heart failure, peripartum cardiomyopathy, microvascular disease in heart failure with preserved ejection fraction, postmyocardial infarction cardiac remodeling, iron in heart failure, and cardio-oncology. While Prof Petrie has many research interests, he also takes pleasure in mentoring future high-caliber cardiologists and has supervised many outstanding individuals during their PhDs and MDs.
Gianluigi Savarese
Associate Professor of Cardiology
Dr Gianluigi Savarese is currently an Associate Professor of Cardiology and Heart Failure Specialist at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden.
Dr Savarese has served on the board for the European Society of Cardiology's Heart Failure Association since 2020, and has previously been a Nucleus member of a working group on Cardiovascular Pharmacotherapy for the ESC. He is a member of the Italian Society of Cardiology, and the Swedish Society of Cardiology.
Dr Savarese attended the University of Naples Federico II University for his degree in Surgery and Medicine between 2004 - 2010. He then went on to stay at the same institution until 2016 as he completed his Specialism in Cardiovascular Diseases. He then continued his postgraduate studies at the University of Zurich between 2015-2017, where he continued his studies into Heart Failure. Finally, Dr Savarese completed his PhD at the Karolinska Institutet in 2018.

Kieran Docherty
Clinical Lecturer (Institute of Cardiovascular & Medical Sciences)
Kieran Docherty studied medicine at the University of Glasgow from 2005-2011. He is a Cardiology Specialist Registrar in the West of Scotland Deanery and a Clinical Research Fellow at the Institute of Cardiovascular and Medical Sciences at the University of Glasgow. He is undertaking a PhD examining the effects of neprilysin inhibition on left ventricular remodelling.
