Stephan Gielen is an Associate Professor, Head of the Heart Failure Programme and an interventional cardiologist at the Heart Centre of the University of Leipzig. He is President-elect of the European Association for Cardiovascular Prevention and Rehabilitation, Speaker of the Working Group of Preventive Cardiology of the German Society of Cardiology, and Vice Speaker of the Working Group on Cardiac Diseases in the Elderly. After his medical education at the University of Bochum, Germany, Harvard Medical School, Boston, and Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, US, he started his internship at Heidelberg University before moving to Leipzig in 1997. There he joined the research group of Professor Rainer Hambrecht, focusing on the pathophysiology of exercise intolerance in chronic heart failure (CHF) and exercise interventions in stable CHF patients. He is lead author of the chapter on Cardiac Rehabilitation in the European Society of Cardiology Textbook on Cardiovascular Medicine and is an author or co-author of over 50 research papers.
