Biography

Professor Michael Kirby worked as a general practitioner in Letchworth, Hertfordshire 1973-2007. He was Director of HertNet (The Hertfordshire Primary Care Research Network) 1998-2007.  The practice provided an open access echocardiography service for patients with heart failure for the North Hertfordshire Primary Care Trust. He was Visiting Professor to the Faculty of Health and Human Sciences, at the University of Hertfordshire, and to the Institute of Diabetes for Older People, IDOP, at the University of Bedfordshire.  Also, Consultant to the Clinical Trials Centre. His clinical work was at the Prostate Centre in London 2007-2020.

He is now Editor of Trends in Urology & Men’s Health. He qualified at St Mary’s Hospital, London before working as a Cardiology Registrar, and subsequently held 2 sessions in cardiology at the QEII Hospital, Welwyn Garden City, Hertfordshire, throughout his GP career. He is an Associate Member of the British Association of Urological Surgeons, Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and a member of the steering committee of the British Society of Sexual Medicine BSSM. His special interests include cardiology, diabetes, osteoporosis, men’s health, urology and education.  He was editor in chief of the Primary Care Cardiovascular Journal (PCCJ), on the editorial board of the British Journal of Primary Care Nursing, the British Journal of Cardiology, Geriatric Medicine, the British Journal of Diabetes and Vascular Disease, Trends in Men’s Health and Urology and the International Journal of Clinical Practice. He also holds membership of several NHS advisory boards.  He has published more than 400 clinical papers and 30 books.
