Manuel J Antunes is a full Professor in the Medical School of the University of Coimbra, Portugal, and Head of the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery of the Coimbra University Hospital. A specialist in cardiothoracic surgery, he has authored more than 200 scientific publications, the majority on the subject of heart valve surgery. Professor Antunes is Vice President of the Portuguese Academy of Medicine and of the Portuguese Society of Cardiology. He is a Fellow of the European Board of Cardiothoracic Surgery (EBCS), the American College of Cardiology (ACC) and the European Society of Cardiology (ESC), where he is Chairman of the Working Group on Valvular Heart Disease. He is a member of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS), the American Association of Cardiothoracic Surgery (AACS) and the European Association for Cardiothoracic Surgery (EACS), of which he is Chairman of the Post-graduate Education Committee. Professor Antunes is also Associate Editor of the Portuguese Journal of Cardiology and the European Journal of Cardiothoracic Surgery, and a regular reviewer for the European Heart Journal, Heart, the Journal of Heart Valve Disease, the Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgeon and Annals of Thoracic Surgery. He holds the degrees of Master of Medicine, Doctor of Philosophy and Doctor of Science.
