Biography

Personal History

Dr Liam McCormick is an Interventional Cardiologist at MonashHeart, Melbourne, Australia.1

Outside of work, he enjoys travelling, reading and keeping fit. He is an avid sports fan and has been a passionate supporter of the West Coast Eagles since their inception.1

 

Academic History

Dr McCormick graduated from the University of Western Australia in 2002 with a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery. Following this, he completed his physician training at Addenbrooke’s Hospital (Cambridge, UK) and advanced clinical cardiology training specialising in interventional cardiology at Papworth Hospital, the largest specialist cardiothoracic hospital in the United Kingdom.1, 2

While in the UK, he completed a Doctorate of Medicine at the University of Cambridge, running a number of clinical trials investigating the cardioprotective effects of a novel metabolic agent in patients with coronary artery disease. He returned to Australia in 2014 to complete a 2-year fellowship in Interventional Cardiology at MonashHeart.1

Dr McCormick is interested in all aspects of clinical cardiology with a particular emphasis on percutaneous coronary intervention and the percutaneous management of structural heart disease, including transcatheter aortic valve implantation and alcohol septal ablation for patients with hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy.2

 

Career Overview

Dr McCormick is an Interventional and Structural Cardiologist at MonashHeart, Monash University.

His clinical practice includes the management of all general cardiac conditions including valvular heart disease, arrhythmias and cardiomyopathies. He also has a particular interest in all aspects of coronary intervention and the percutaneous management of structural heart disease.1

Dr McCormick has a keen interest in cardiovascular research and has published extensively in university textbooks and high impact journals, including the Journal of the American College of Cardiology and Circulation: Cardiovascular Interventions. He has presented his research at over 14 international cardiology conferences and in 2012, was awarded a prize for the best abstract at the British Cardiovascular Society Annual Scientific Conference.1, 2
