Personal History

Born in Noia and raised in Santiago de Compostela, Dr José Ramón González Juanatey is one of the most renowned cardiologists in Spain.4

Dr Juanatey is Head of the Cardiology and UCC Service of the Santiago de Compostela University Hospital Complex (CHUS) and Professor of Cardiology at the University of Santiago de Compostela (USC).3


Academic History

Dr Juanatey graduated from the USC School of Medicine. He specialised in Cardiology at the Hospital Clínico de Santiago and in Cardiac Electrophysiology at the Gregorio Marañón and completed stays at the University Clinic of Navarra, Karolinska Hospital (Stockholm) and Stanford University (California).5


Career Overview


Dr Juanatey is Head of the Cardiology and UCC Service at the University of Santiago de Compostela. As a Professor there, he has supervised over 10 PhD theses. Dr Juanatey also directs the group of Cardiovascular Research.1

He is former President of the Spanish Society of Cardiology and has served in the European Society of Cardiology Press Committee (2011 - 2013) and Education Committee (2013 - 2018). Dr Juanatey has published more than 680 articles accumulating more than 27,000 citations in top international scientific journals including Circulation, Journal of the American College of Cardiology, International Journal of Cardiology, Cardiovascular Research and American Journal of Physiology-Heart and Circulatory Physiology. He has also led a multitude of national and international research projects and clinical trials with public and private funding.1, 2, 3
