Freek W A Verheugt is Professor of Cardiology and Chairman of the Department of Cardiology at the Heartcenter of the University Medical Center of Nijmegen, The Netherlands. He has published over 250 papers in peer-reviewed international journals including the New England Journal of Medicine, Lancet, Circulation, Journal of the American College of Cardiology and European Heart Journal, of which he is an editorial board member. He is an editorial adviser for the Lancet and Circulation. His main fields of scientific interest are pharmacological and interventional treatments of acute coronary syndromes. Professor Verheugt was a professor at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center in Denver, CO, and at the Free University in Amsterdam. He was President of the Netherlands Society of Cardiology between 1999 and 2001. He graduated from the University of Amsterdam in 1974 and wrote a thesis on platelet and granulocyte antigens and antibodies. He trained in cardiology at the Thoraxcenter of the Erasmus University in Rotterdam.
