Biography

Personal History

Dr. Charles “Chuck” Simonton is based in the San Francisco Bay Area and works at Abiomed as Chief Medical Officer, Vice President of Global Clinical and Medical Affairs.

 

Academic History

Dr. Simonton studied at Harvard Medical School between 1976 and 1980 where he earned his MD. He then went on to complete his internship, residency and chief residency in the Department of Internal Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco. He worked as a cardiology fellow at Duke University Medical Center, completing clinical training and research in congestive heart failure and interventional cardiology.

 

Career Overview

Prior to his current position, Dr. Simonton spent almost 30 years as an interventional cardiologist working with complex cardiac and vascular patients. He began his career at Duke University Medical Center then moved to the Sanger Clinic in Charlotte, North Carolina, where he created his own research team to study patient outcomes following the use of new cardiac technologies. Dr. Simonton founded the Carolinas Cardiovascular Research Foundation at the Carolinas Heart Institute, which is now part of Atrium Health.

During his 20 years leading the Interventional Cardiology program at the Sanger Clinic in Charlotte, NC, Dr. Simonton founded the Carolinas Cardiovascular Foundation for research and education. He worked as the CMO of Abbott Vascular from 2007-2019 where he led programs that led to FDA and global approvals of carotid stenting, MitraClip and Absorb BVS.

He joined Abiomed in June 2020 as Vice President of Global Clinical and Medical Affairs and Chief Medical Officer. He says that his passion now is to elevate the practice guidelines for MCS in high-risk PCI and AMI shock so that more patients with severe chronic or acute CAD conditions can benefit with improved quality of life and clinical outcomes.
