Biography

Dr John P Foran is a consultant interventional cardiologist and cardiac electrophysiologist at the Royal Brompton & Harefield Hospitals NHS Trust, now part of the Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust.

He qualified in medicine/surgery at St George's Hospital (University of London) in 1988, and then pursued specialist training in all aspects of cardiovascular medicine, including paediatric cardiology.

Having completed his specialist training in 1999, he undertook his first consultant post in the year 2000.

In 2003, Dr Foran pioneered left atrial appendage (LAA) occlusion in the United Kingdom. LAA occlusion is a key-hole interventional technique employed to reduce the risk of stroke and systemic embolism in high-bleeding-risk atrial fibrillation patients as an alternative to oral anticoagulant therapy.
