Overview
In this on-demand version of the live broadcast, chaired by Dr Martin Swaans (St Antonius Hospital, NL), faculty explore the evolving data for transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) and why we need to improve triaging practices towards the most appropriate interventions.
Leading experts, Prof Sabine Bleiziffer (Heart and Diabetes Center NRW, DE), Prof Vijay Kunadian (Newcastle University, UK) and Dr Marta Sitges (Hospital Clínic de Barcelona, ES), discuss valve design and durability, clinical data from the SMART trial presented at ACC 2024 and how we can provide greater access for women in TAVI.
Learning Objectives
- Recall TAVI SMART trial data and the implications on clinical practice
- Describe novel valve designs and the impact on long-term performance
- Develop an expert-led approach to improving equitable access to TAVI
Target Audience
- General Cardiologists
- Echocardiographers
- Physiologists
- Physicians referring patients for TAVI
- Interventional Cardiologists
- Cardiac Surgeons

Martin Swaans
Dr Martin Swaans is cardiologist at St Antonius Hospital Nieuwegein in the Netherlands. Dr Swaans specialises in cardiac imaging, particularly in electrophysiology and interventional procedures. He is a frequent speaker at conferences around the globe and a world authority for interventional imaging. Dr Swaans is heavily involved in the development of cutting edge imaging technologies.
Sabine Bleiziffer
Senior Consultant Cardiac Surgeon
Prof Sabine Bleiziffer is a Senior Consultant Cardiac Surgeon at Heart and Diabetes Center NRW, Bad Oeynhausen, DE.
She graduated from the University of Leipzig and the Ludwig Maximilian University in Munich, Germany.
Prof Bleiziffer focuses on structural valve diseases.
Vijay Kunadian
Professor of Interventional Cardiology
Prof Vijay Kunadian is Personal Chair and Professor of Interventional Cardiology at Newcastle University.
Prof Kunadian completed all her cardiology training in the North East of England. She undertook an international academic fellowship in cardiology at the TIMI/PERFUSE Study group, Brigham and Women’s Hospital/Harvard Medical School, Boston MA.
Prof Kunadian has an international reputation in interventional cardiology and cardiovascular research, making her a sought-after and respected speaker at prominent national and international meetings. She has championed diversity in her specialty as a role model; only 5% of interventional cardiologist are female in the UK, <1% are clinical academics.
Marta Sitges
Director, Cardiovascular Institute
Prof Marta Sitges is a senior consultant non-invasive cardiologist at the Cardiovascular Institute in Hospital Clinic and Professor of Medicine at the University of Barcelona. She has also been the Director of the Cardiovascular Institute since October 2015.
Her main clinical practice is related to clinical and interventional echocardiography, sports cardiology and heart valve disease. She has an extensive publication track in these fields with participation in leading National and International meetings, she has received more than 60 peer reviewed grants and directed multiple MD and PhD thesis.
