Overview
During the "Advances in Intravascular imaging" course in London, Simple Education, in association with Radcliffe Cardiology, filmed a roundtable discussion focusing on the topical area of 'The role of IVUS in Contemporary PCI'.
This discussion was moderated by Dr Andrew Sharp (Exeter, UK) who was joined by an expert group of physicians including Prof Takashi Akasaka (Wakayama, Japan), Prof Carlo di Mario (Florence, Italy), Prof Jacek Legutko (Krakow, Poland) and Dr Peter O'Kane (Bournemouth, UK).
The meeting comprised of three panel discussions on a range of topical issues related to all aspects of IVUS Imaging.
Panellists
- Dr Andrew Sharp (Exeter, UK)
- Prof Takashi Akasaka (Wakayama, JP)
- Prof Carlo Di Mario (Florence, IT)
- Prof Jacek Legutko (Krakow, PL)
- Dr Peter O’Kane (Bournemouth, UK)
Target Audience
- This educational activity is intended for an international audience, specifically interventional cardiologists and cardiologists. However, other healthcare professionals involved in the care of coronary artery disease (CAD) patients will also find this to

Faculty Biographies
Andrew SP Sharp
Professor of Cardiology
Andrew Sharp qualified from Edinburgh Medical School in 1998 and subsequently pursued an MD postgraduate research degree at the University of Edinburgh. His doctoral research focused on the hypertensive heart, establishing a foundation for his ongoing clinical and academic interest in hypertension and cardiovascular disease.
Clinical Training & Early Career
Dr Sharp completed his early clinical training at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh before moving to London for senior clinical training at the hospitals of Imperial College London. He then undertook the prestigious Milan-Imperial Interventional Cardiology Fellowship programme, which included a year in Milan at San Raffaele and Columbus Hospitals, where he trained under leading experts in interventional cardiology. This combination of UK and international training shaped his expertise in complex coronary interventions and device-based therapies.

Takashi Akasaka
Interventional Cardiologist
Prof Takashi Akasaka is an Interventional Cardiologist at Wakayama Medical University, Wakayama, JP.
He graduated from Wakayama Medical University in 1982 and finished his residency at Kobe City Medical Center General Hospital.
Since 2005 he has been devoted to the clinical research work using OCT.
Carlo Di Mario
Full Professor of Cardiology
Professor Carlo Di Mario was born in Modena, Italy. He is an internationally recognised interventional cardiologist with a career spanning Italy, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom. His clinical and academic work has focused on complex coronary and structural heart interventions, and he is widely regarded as a leading authority in transcatheter valve therapies and advanced interventional techniques.
Academic History
Professor Di Mario graduated in medicine from the University of Padua, where he also specialised in cardiology. He pursued advanced training in interventional cardiology at Erasmus University in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, where he completed his PhD. His academic development combined clinical cardiology with imaging-guided interventions and translational research, laying the foundation for his later leadership roles in structural and coronary intervention.
Career Overview
Professor Di Mario became Professor of…
Jacek Legutko
Prof Jacek Legutko is an Interventional Cardiologist at Jagiellonian University Medical College, Head of the Clinical Department of Interventional Cardiology, John Paul II Hospital in Krakow and Chair of the Scientific Congress Committee of the Polish Cardiac Society.
Prof Jacek Legutko's main research interest is primary PCI in acute myocardial infarction, intravascular imaging and physiology-guided therapy in coronary artery disease and complex percutaneous coronary interventions.
Peter O’Kane
Consultant Interventional Cardiologist
Dr Peter O'Kane has been Editor-in-Chief of Interventional Cardiology: Reviews, Research, Resources (ICR3) since July 2021.
Dr Peter O’Kane was appointed as a consultant interventional cardiologist at Royal Bournemouth Hospital in July 2007 and has performed more than 7000 PCI cases. He has extensive experience with coronary physiology and intra-coronary imaging to guide intervention and the many tools and techniques to manage bifurcations, calcification and chronic occlusions.
