Faculty Biographies
Philipp Lurz
University Medical Center Mainz, Mainz, DE
Prof Philipp Lurz is Director of the Department of Cardiology Universitätsmedizin Mainz, Germany. Prior to this, he served as Deputy Head of the Department at Heart Center Leipzig, Germany. Previously, Prof Lurz was a Clinical Research Fellow at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children NHS Foundation Trust. He completed his education at the University of Leipzig, and is a member of the German Society of Cardiology. Philipp is widely published in leading international peer-reviewed journals.
Michael Joner
Head of the Preclinical Research
Prof Michael Joner is DZHK Professor for Early Clinical Trials at the German Heart Centre in Munich, Germany. His main research focus is on findings novel diagnostic or therapeutic pathways to target atherosclerosis.
Prof Joner completed his medical training at the University of Wuerzburg in Würzburg, Germany. During his course, he went on to complete a 2-year fellowship in cardiovascular pathology under the lead of Prof Virmani in Washington DC.
Felix Mahfoud
Professor of Cardiology and Chairman of the Department of Cardiology
Prof Felix Mahfoud is a German-born physician and cardiologist. He completed his medical studies and doctorate at Johann-Wolfgang-Goethe University in Frankfurt, Germany, graduating in 2008. Early in his career, he trained in internal medicine and cardiology at Saarland University Medical Center in Homburg, Germany, where he later served in a variety of clinical and leadership roles before relocating to Switzerland. He holds an additional academic appointment as a Visiting Professor at Harvard-MIT in Biomedical Engineering in Boston, MA. Prof Mahfoud currently lives and works in Basel, Switzerland, where he leads the Department of Cardiology at University Hospital Basel.

Andrew Wu
Former Vice President, Research & Development, ReCor Medical
Mr Wu has over 20 years of experience in medical device product development. He has worked on devices in the fields of interventional cardiology, electrophysiology, pulmonology, and women’s health, and has taken a number of them from early concept phase through clinical or commercial launch.
