Under the expert moderation of Prof Harry Crijns (Maastricht, NL), a leading international faculty comprising Prof Carlo de Asmundis (Brussels, BE), Prof Mark La Meir (Brussels, BE) and Dr Ashley Nisbet (Bristol, UK) examine which arrhythmias could benefit from a hybrid approach, review the practical implementation of hybrid ablation in IST, and consider learnings from persistent and long-standing AF.


With the applications of hybrid ablation stretching beyond the traditional AF core, this insightful programme (recorded at EHRA 2023 in Barcelona) is both evidence-based and practical with case studies demonstrating real-world applications. The session also considers the knowledge and team composition requirements to enhance effectiveness when administering the hybrid procedure for optimal long-term patient outcomes.

Harry Crijns

Harry Crijns

Harry Crijns is a cardiologist with a specialization in cardiac arrhythmias. Dr Crijns obtained a PhD in 1993 on the medical treatment of atrial fibrillation (AF) and has since then achieved significant improvements in treatment through the introduction of care innovation and research by introducing risk scores CHA2DS2-VASc, HAS-BLED and the HATCH score. 

Dr Crijns is a member of the AER editorial board.

Carlo de Asmundis

Carlo de Asmundis

Carlo de Asmundis is a Professor in Cardiology at Vrije Universiteit Brussel, and Chair of the Heart Rhythm Management Center at Universitair Ziekenhuis Brussel, Begium. He also serves as Director of the Postgraduate Program in Cardiac Electrophysiology and Pacing at Vrije Universiteit Brussel. Prof de Asmundis graduated medical school in University Vita-Salute San Raffaele Hospital, Milan, Italy, before completing his residency in Cardiology at the Universitaʻ degli Studi di Milano. He subsequently completed his fellowship training in electrophysiology and pacing at the UZ Brussel, under the direction of Prof P Brugada.

Mark La Meir

Mark La Meir

Mark La Meir is Professor and Head of the Department Cardiac Surgery at the University Hospital Brussels, Belgium, and consultant at the Maastricht University Medical Center, The Netherlands. 

He received his medical degree from Free University Brussels, and his surgical degree in 1998 from the same institution. Prof La Meir received his PhD on Hybrid treatment of atrial fibrillation from the Maastricht University Medical Center in 2012. His key specialties include minimally invasive coronary surgery, heart rhythm surgery, cardiac mapping and ablation procedures, atrial fibrillation surgery, and ventricular rhythm problems.

Ashley Nisbet

Ashley Nisbet

Ashley Nisbet is a Consultant Cardiologist and Electrophysiologist at University Hospitals Bristol NHS Foundation Trust and an Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer at the University of Bristol, UK.

Dr Nisbet special clinical interests include investigation and treatment of cardiac arrhythmias, in particular catheter ablation of complex arrhythmias, management of patients with inherited arrhythmia syndromes, implantation of pacemakers and complex devices including ICDs and CRT devices.

Dr Nisbet graduated from the University of Aberdeen in 2000 before undertaking medical training in the West of Scotland, followed by a British Heart Foundation Clinical PhD Scholarship to study cardiac electrophysiology at the University of Glasgow.
