Faculty Biographies
Stavros Konstantinides
Professor for Clinical Trials and Medical Director of the Center for Thrombosis and Hemostasis
Prof Stavros Konstantinides, MD, FESC, is Professor for Clinical Trials and Medical Director of the Center for Thrombosis and Hemostasis (CTH) at the University of Mainz, Germany. He is also Professor of Cardiology at the Democritus University of Thrace, Greece. He graduated from the Aristotle University of Thessalonica, Greece, and earned his doctorate degree at the University of Freiburg, Germany.
For the past 35 years, his clinical and translational research has focused on the risk stratification and risk-adapted antithrombotic management of thrombosis and pulmonary embolism. He has designed and coordinated, and has been principal investigator of numerous high-impact national and international academically sponsored multicentre trials. He is leading member of national and European committees, task forces for clinical practice guidelines, and of networks on pulmonary circulation and right ventricular function.
José M Montero-Cabezas
Interventional Cardiologist
Dr José Montero-Cabezas is an interventional cardiologist at Leiden University Medical Center (LUMC), Netherlands. He completed his cardiology training at the 12 de Octubre University Hospital (Complutense University, Madrid), followed by a fellowship in interventional cardiology at LUMC. He holds a PhD from Leiden University, a Master’s degree in Healthcare Management and Administration from CEU University (Spain), and completed a postgraduate program in Clinical Research at Harvard Medical School (USA).
Dr Montero-Cabezas has a particular clinical and research interest in complex percutaneous coronary interventions (with a focus on chronic total occlusions), mechanical circulatory support, invasive therapies for acute pulmonary embolism, and structural heart interventions such as TAVI.

Sylwia Sławek-Szmyt
Interventional Cardiologist
Sylwia Sławek-Szmyt is an Assistant Professor and Consultant Cardiologist at the Department of Cardiology, Poznan University of Medical Sciences, Poland, with a focus on interventional cardiology and pulmonary embolism care. She leads the outpatient clinic for patients after pulmonary embolism and performs a wide range of catheter-based coronary, structural, and pulmonary vascular interventions. Her clinical practice is complemented by active involvement in international fellowships, including structural interventions training in Katowice and interventional cardiology at Heart Center Dresden. She is a Fellow of the European Society of Cardiology and an active member of multiple ESC working groups and EAPCI committees.
