  • Pericarditis is inflammation of the pericardial sac and represents the most common pathological process involving the pericardium. It may be further classified into acute, incipient (subacute), chronic and recurrent. Other less common pericardial syndromes include pericardial effusion, cardiac tamponade, and constrictive pericarditis.

Other less common pericardial syndromes include pericardial effusion, cardiac tamponade, and constrictive pericarditis.

    Noninfectious aetiologies include malignancy, radiation, connective tissue disease, post-traumatic, post-pericardiotomy, post-MI (including late autoimmune-mediated pericarditis; termed Dressler syndrome), uraemia and drug-induced (e.g., procainamide, hydralasine, isoniasid).
