Biography

Dr Salvatore Carbone, PhD, RDN, MS, FHFSA, FASPEN is an Associate Professor and Program Director of the Nutrition Program at the EVMS School of Health Professions, and an Associate Professor within the EVMS Division of Endocrine and Metabolic Disorders, Strelitz Diabetes Center, Department of Internal Medicine, at the Macon & Joan Brock Virginia Health Sciences at Old Dominion University. Previously, Dr. Carbone served as a tenured Associate Professor at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU). Additionally, he is a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN).

Dr Carbone is a nationally and internationally recognised leader in the field of nutrition and dietetics, with particular expertise in the role of nutrition and obesity in the development and progression of chronic diseases. His contributions to the field were recognised when he was named among the top 2% of scientists by Stanford University in 2022, 2023, and 2024. In 2023, he was also honored with the Investigator Award from the Heart Failure Society of America.

Dr Carbone’s research focuses on dietary interventions and their influence on body composition, cardiorespiratory fitness, and energy metabolism, particularly in patients with obesity and heart failure. A key area of his work investigates the effects of foods rich in unsaturated fatty acids on patients with heart failure. Additionally, he has conducted research on the effects of glucose-lowering agents, such as sodium-glucose co-transporter-2 inhibitors, in patients with type 2 diabetes and heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF).

Dr Carbone has authored over 180 peer-reviewed publications and contributed to 3 book chapters, in addition to contributing to the 12th edition of the ACSM's Guidelines for Exercise Testing and Prescription for the metabolic syndrome and overweight/obesity chapters. His leadership extends to roles in respected organisations such as the American Society for Nutrition (ASN) and the American Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition (ASPEN), where he has chaired research sections and currently participating in critical nutrition guidelines development. He is currently serving as guidelines and position statements writing committee for ASPEN, ESPEN, the Heart Failure Association of the European Society of Cardiology, and the American Association of Heart Failure nurses.
