Robert M Wachter

Robert M Wachter is Professor and Chair of the Department of Medicine at UCSF and a leading figure in hospital medicine, having coined the term “hospitalist” in 1996. He is the author of six books, including the New York Times bestseller The Digital Doctor, with his latest, A Giant Leap: How AI is Transforming Healthcare and What That Means for Our Future, forthcoming from Portfolio/Penguin in February 2026. His work in patient safety, health policy and medical education has earned him honours including election to the National Academy of Medicine.
