Richard Sutton

Personal History

Professor Richard Sutton was born in Newport, Monmouthshire, Great Britain in 1940. His father was an ENT specialist. “I decided to be a doctor at the age of 15. My father told me if I want to be a doctor, I had to work hard. I graduated from high school with the best grade.” ⁵

His first job was at Plymouth General Hospital as a house surgeon in General Surgery. He decided to become a cardiologist during his time at London Chest Hospital in 1967 as cardiology was the area of practice he enjoyed most during his medical school training.⁵

Prof Sutton enjoys walking, travel, swimming, opera, classical music, fashion, collecting antiques and interior decoration.^{5, 6} He lives in Monaco with his family.

Academic History

Prof Sutton graduated from King's College Hospital Medical School in 1964 and received his Doctor of Science degree in 1988.^{1, 6} 

He trained in Medicine and Cardiology at National Heart Hospital, London from 1970 to 1976 and University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, US, from 1968 to 1969.^{2, 4}

Career Overview

Prof Sutton became Professor of Clinical Cardiology at Imperial College, London in 2003 and Emeritus Professor in 2011.¹ He is now Honorary Consultant Cardiologist at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust.³ From 1990 to 1995, he was President of British Heart Rhythm Society (then BPEG) after being Co-Founder in 1976.¹ He has written and edited six books and published over 300 peer-reviewed papers, primarily on the topics of pacing and syncope.³

Prof Sutton is a fellow of the American College of Cardiology, the European Society of Cardiology, the American Heart Association and the Heart Rhythm Society, among others. He has served as President of the Royal Society of Medicine Cardiology Section and actively participates in the British Cardiovascular Society and the British Medical Association.^{6, 7}
