Biography
Clinical expertise and structural heart focus
Dr Megan Coylewright is a structural interventional cardiologist specialising in minimally invasive treatments for congestive heart failure and stroke prevention, including transcatheter valve repair and replacement (TAVR, TEER), left atrial appendage occlusion (LAAO) and PFO closure. She is a frequent lecturer on technical and procedural topics, a national proctor, and a recognised expert at the intersection of health policy, patient‑centred care and shared decision‑making. She is widely known for her advocacy to broaden access to cardiovascular therapies and clinical trials.
Patient engagement and national Heart Team leadership
Dr Coylewright is Editor Emeritus of the American College of Cardiology’s CardioSmart/Patient Voice Programme and co‑leads the national Heart Team study, EVOLVE, focused on optimising multidisciplinary decision‑making in structural heart disease.
Training, public health and health policy background
Her early experience as a Teach for America middle‑school teacher in the South Bronx continues to shape her perspective on social determinants of health. She completed medical school, residency and a Master of Public Health at Johns Hopkins, where she also served as an intern on Capitol Hill and as Health Disparities Coordinator at the Baltimore City Public Health Department. She then undertook five years of cardiovascular training at the Mayo Clinic in her home state of Minnesota.
Programme building and multidisciplinary innovation
Dr Coylewright has successfully built Structural Heart Programmes in two distinct settings: a rural academic medical centre in northern New England and a large urban public hospital in the southern United States. She has led the development of left atrial appendage closure, and transcatheter mitral and tricuspid repair services, creating multidisciplinary pathways with neurology, cardiac surgery, electrophysiology and heart failure teams.
Education, leadership and workforce development
Committed to education and the future of interventional cardiology, Dr Coylewright serves as faculty for the ACC Clinical Trials Research Program, supporting the next generation of clinical trialists. She also leads key initiatives within SCAI, including her role as Co‑Director of SCAI ELM, which is dedicated to expanding leadership skill sets and retaining a diverse community of interventional operators.
