Biography

Prof Mariya Tokmakova is Vice-Rector for Scientific and Research Activities at the Medical University of Plovdiv, where she also serves as Head of the Cardiology Clinic at University Hospital St Georgi and is a member of the Academic Staff at the Department of Cardiology. She was appointed Professor of Cardiology in 2022, following earlier academic appointments including Associate Professor in 2008 and a PhD awarded in 2000.

Her leadership roles include serving on the Executive Board of the Bulgarian Society of Cardiology from 2012 to 2022 and as its President from 2018 to 2020. She is a board member of the Heart Failure Association at the European Society of Cardiology (2022–2024) and is a Fellow of both the European Society of Cardiology and the American College of Cardiology.

Prof Tokmakova has undertaken specialist training across Europe and the US, including fellowships at Hopital Beaujon (France), Brigham and Women's Hospital, Harvard Medical School (US) and postgraduate training at the University of Zurich (Switzerland).
