Biography

Prof Mamas A Mamas trained in medicine at the University of Oxford, completing his clinical training in 2000. He has since established an international reputation both as a practising interventional cardiologist and as a leading academic researcher in cardiovascular disease. He divides his time between clinical practice and academic work in the United Kingdom.

Academic History

Prof Mamas began his medical education at the University of Oxford, where he completed an MA in Physiological Sciences before undertaking a DPhil in Physiological Sciences funded by the British Heart Foundation. He completed his clinical training in medicine at Oxford in 2000. Following qualification, he undertook house officer posts in Oxford and senior house officer posts in cardiology at major London teaching hospitals. He subsequently gained his specialist training in cardiology, completing a National Training Number in Cardiology in the North West Deanery, and finished his specialist training in 2012. Later academic appointments include roles as Clinical Lecturer and Senior Clinical Lecturer in Cardiology at the University of Manchester before his current position at Keele University.

Career Overview

After completing his clinical and specialist training, Prof Mamas progressed through academic cardiology posts in Manchester, culminating in his appointment as Senior Clinical Lecturer and Honorary Consultant Cardiologist. In 2015, he joined Keele University as Professor of Cardiology and Honorary Consultant Interventional Cardiologist at the Royal Stoke Hospital, University Hospitals of North Midlands NHS Trust.

In addition to his clinical practice treating patients with coronary artery disease using percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) in both elective and emergency settings, he is the Clinical Director of the Centre for Prognosis Research at Keele University. In his research leadership role he directs a multidisciplinary team of clinicians, data scientists, and statisticians focused on using routinely collected electronic healthcare data to better understand the diagnosis, treatment, and outcomes of real-world patients with cardiovascular disease.

Prof Mamas is Associate Editor of Circulation: Cardiovascular Interventions, Senior Clinical Editor at TCTMD, and has held membership and leadership roles within the European Society of Cardiology’s working groups and the British Cardiovascular Intervention Society.

He has published extensively on cardiovascular outcomes research, particularly using large-scale electronic health records and “big data,” with hundreds of peer-reviewed manuscripts to his name.
