Biography

From 1973 to 1979, Sievert studied human medicine at the universities of Mainz and Frankfurt. In 1979 he passed the medical state examination top of his class and received his licence to practise. In 1980 he completed his doctorate (Dr. med.) in angiology, awarded magna cum laude.

He then underwent postgraduate training in internal medicine, nephrology, and intensive care medicine at the city hospital in Offenbach. In 1987 he was certified in internal medicine, and in 1988 he gained the cardiology subspecialty designation at University Hospital Frankfurt. He further acquired subspecialties in angiology (1996) and intensive-care medicine (1997). In 1990 he completed his habilitation in interventional cardiology.

Career Overview

In 1990, Horst Sievert became Chief Physician of Cardiology at the Heart and Circulation Center in Rotenburg, where he established and led one of Germany’s largest interventional-cardiology departments until 1993. He then moved to Bethanien Hospital in Frankfurt as Senior Consultant, expanding his work in cardiology and angiology. In 2003, he founded the CardioVascular Center Frankfurt (CVC) at the Sankt Katharinen Hospital, where he continues to serve as Director while also holding a professorship in internal medicine and cardiology at Goethe University Frankfurt. From 2007 to 2009, Sievert worked in the United States as Director of the Catheter Laboratory for Peripheral Vessels and Structural Heart Diseases at the Washington Hospital Center, complementing his clinical and academic leadership in Frankfurt. Throughout his career, he has led pivotal clinical trials, contributed to the development of innovative cardiovascular technologies, and built an international reputation as one of the foremost figures in interventional cardiology.

Recognition & Contributions

Sievert has personally performed tens of thousands of minimally invasive catheter-based cardiovascular interventions, including coronary, peripheral, structural, congenital, and valvular procedures.

He is widely regarded as a pioneer in multiple interventional procedures — among them percutaneous closure of the left atrial appendage (LAA), closure of patent foramen ovale (PFO) and atrial septal defects (ASD), valvuloplasty, transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI), mitral and tricuspid valve interventions, paravalvular leak closures, and interventions for acute stroke.

He has authored hundreds of peer-reviewed articles and book chapters, delivered thousands of invited lectures worldwide, and served as principal investigator in more than a hundred “first-in-human” trials — contributing significantly to the advancement and clinical adoption of modern cardiovascular devices and techniques.

He holds fellowships in multiple professional societies (including the American College of Cardiology, the European Society of Cardiology, and the Society for Cardiovascular Angiography & Interventions), and has founded and directed major international conferences and congresses dedicated to endovascular and structural-heart treatments (e.g. CSI Frankfurt).
