H J G M Crijns is Chairman of the Department of Cardiology at the University Hospital Maastricht, a position he has held since 2001. He is a fellow of the European Society of Cardiology and member of the Nucleus of the Working Group on Arrhythmias, and of the North American Society of Pacing and Electrophysiology. His main research interest is clinical atrial fibrillation. He defended his thesis in 1993 and was appointed Professor of Cardiology at the University of Groningen, The Netherlands, and Chairman of the Department of Cardiology at the University Hospital Groningen in 1997. Dr Crijns studied medicine at the University of Amsterdam and qualified as a cardiologist at the University Hospital Groningen in 1987.
