Career Overview

Professor Lip is Director of the Liverpool Centre for Cardiovascular Science, a major collaboration between the University of Liverpool and Liverpool Heart & Chest Hospital. In this role, he has led multidisciplinary research programmes focused on cardiovascular outcomes, atrial fibrillation, thrombosis, and stroke prevention, integrating clinical care with population health and translational science.

His research has been central to the development and validation of risk stratification tools and evidence-based approaches for atrial fibrillation management, anticoagulation therapy, and prevention of thromboembolic events. His work is widely cited and has shaped international clinical practice and health policy.

Professor Lip has held numerous leadership roles within major professional societies. He is a member of the European Heart Rhythm Association (EHRA) and serves as Chairman of its Scientific Documents Committee, overseeing the development of consensus statements and guidance documents. He also serves on the board of the Working Group on Thrombosis of the European Society of Cardiology.

In addition to his European roles, he has contributed directly to national healthcare policy in the United Kingdom, having served as a clinical adviser for the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) guidelines on the management of atrial fibrillation.

Professor Lip is also actively involved in medical publishing. He serves as a Section Editor for Arrhythmia & Electrophysiology Review, contributing to the dissemination of high-quality research and expert reviews in heart rhythm disorders.
