Biography

Giuseppe Mancia is an Italian physician and scientist internationally recognized for his lifelong contributions to cardiovascular medicine and hypertension research. He has spent the majority of his academic and clinical career in Milan and Monza, Italy, where he has played a central role in shaping modern hypertension research, education, and clinical practice across Europe and worldwide.

 

Academic History

Professor Mancia trained in internal medicine and cardiovascular physiology in Italy, developing early expertise in hypertension and circulatory control. He spent his academic career at the University of Milano-Bicocca, where he later became Professor Emeritus. He served for two decades as Chairman of the Division and Department of Internal Medicine at the same university at San Gerardo Hospital in Monza. In parallel, he was Director of the Interuniversity Center for Clinical Physiology and Hypertension involving the Universities of Milan, Milano-Bicocca, and Pavia.

 

Career Overview

Professor Mancia has held numerous leadership roles in academic medicine and international scientific societies. He has served repeatedly as Chairman of the Scientific and Organizing Committee of the European Society of Hypertension meetings over nearly two decades, reflecting his sustained influence on the scientific direction of European hypertension research.

He is a past President of the International Society of Hypertension, the European Society of Hypertension, the European Society of Clinical Investigation, and the Italian Society of Hypertension. Professor Mancia has also chaired the Task Force responsible for the European Society of Hypertension and European Society of Cardiology Hypertension Guidelines on multiple occasions, including the editions published in 2003, 2007, 2009, 2013, and 2018. These guidelines have had a major impact on the diagnosis and management of hypertension worldwide.

Professor Mancia currently serves as Chairman of the European Society of Hypertension Foundation and the Hypertension Center at the Policlinico of Monza. He is an honorary member of numerous national and international hypertension and cardiovascular societies and continues to play an active advisory role in global cardiovascular research and policy.

He has also received multiple honorary professorships and honorary doctorates in medicine from universities across Europe, including Amsterdam, Córdoba, Gdansk, Bucharest, and Glasgow, as well as major international lectureships and awards such as the Hariri Memorial Lecture and Award and the MacDonald Award of McMaster University.

Professor Mancia has published more than 2,000 articles in international peer-reviewed journals. His work has received more than 220,000 citations, with an h-index exceeding 170, placing him on the Clarivate Analytics list of the world’s highly cited scientists. His research has fundamentally shaped current understanding and management of hypertension and cardiovascular disease.
