Biography
Professor Barbara Casadei is currently serving as the British Heart Foundation Professor of Cardiovascular Medicine at the University of Oxford and Head of the National Heart and Lung Institute at Imperial College, London. She made history as the first female President of the European Society of Cardiology from 2018 to 2020.
Prof Casadei graduated in medicine from the University of Pavia, Italy, and began her clinical training at the University Department of Medicine in Varese, Italy and The University of Oxford, Oxford, UK. As well as holding a DPhil in Cardiovascular Medicine, she has received multiple fellowships including the Joan and Richard Doll Fellowship in 1991, the BHF Senior Research Fellowship in 2001, and the UK Academy of Medical Sciences Fellowship in 2013.
Prof Casadei’s research interests focus on cellular studies in cardiovascular diseases such as atrial fibrillation and heart failure. Through patient investigations, she aims to uncover new disease mechanisms and identify potential therapeutic targets for clinical trials.
